Alex H. Rafi is an award winning St. Louis based documentary filmmaker and educator. Hailing from Miami, FL, he earned his MFA in Documentary Film at Stanford University to focus on creating works with utility as teaching tools, as archives of significant people and events in communities, and as films that encourage understanding and empathy.
His short film On Task (2019), an experimental portrait about a young high school teacher, screened at several film festivals including Mammoth Lakes, SF DocFest, and the New Orleans Film Festival. His most recent film a door away (2021), a portrait of a mid-20’s Black man whose passion for cosplay represents his pursuit of personal and career success, premiered at Brooklyn Film Festival and has since screened at several other festivals including the 10th annual BlackStar Film Festival. a door away has also won awards for Best Documentary at AfroComicCon’s Film Festival in 2021, the 2023 Con Nooga Film Festival, and at the 2023 Pensacola Short Film Festival.
Alex is invested in foregrounding the stories of people of color, millennials, and Gen Z, and is looking forward to more opportunities to connect with inspiring people around the United States.
He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Saint Louis University where he teaches courses in video, documentary, and film studies. He also continues to produce nonfiction creative works as a director with his production company, Sky Pier Films.
